On the Map - Sheffield - Millenium Gallery - Graphic Interpretation
I visited this exhibition in Sheffield to get inspiration and an insight into a variety of ways to design with maps and what use maps can have in design while being manipulated and experimented with.
This image is the promotional leaflet from the exhibition. I thought the use of colour and shape was quite graphic and professional.
The following images are from the promotional leaflet and describe the designers involved in the show, how they work and examples of their pieces in the exhibition.
This image is by Paula Amaral and it is her living area mapped out. I think the simplicity of shape and colour and simple labeling of the objects is what makes it interesting and the quality of line is simple and professional.
I admire Betty Peppers work that was shown. As a jewelery designer she creates a wide variety of things. She likes to take ordinary things like maps and atlases and she creates desirable objects by incorporating jewelery and textiles into them. She has an ongoing series called 'Book Keeping' where she takes charity shop books to house her textile jewelery. I also admire Phyllis Pearsall's work and contribution to graphic design. Before this exhibition i didn't know who created the A-Z books as apposed to the fold out maps and i think her use of symbol and colour is quite intelligent.
