Current Brief Work....

Head over to my module blog to find out more....

get your clock out update

These images below are what products we have designed so far. We took these images to the crit to show people our work. We took our booklet designs, our widget design, our tshirt designs, our logo and our character superhero.

After having a crit today, people in the group didn't really understand our brand name and the reason why we had a superhero so we have decided to re-brand ourselves. Due to this we will change the logo, the name, get rid of the superhero and change the logo and name on all our products. This isn't a hard task and shouldn't take too long but it will create a better design.

get your clock out update.

We have created a character Tempus Fugit as a mascot for our project. We designed him by experimenting with illustrator and a variety of attributes for a hero. This is the final character:

We have created t-shirt designs as promotional pieces.

We created a basic logo with our name Tempus Fugit

We've also set up a Blog that you can see here. We will be using this to update the 1st years with news of the course, the deadlines and important events for them to organize into their time.

Rubik's Cube

After doing my 1982 project with its focus on the Rubik's Cube i thought this image was quite a funny contextual reference, as this is what i would probably do with a Rubik's Cube. I dont have the patience to do them! I found it on ffffound

Speaking from Experience - Get Your Clock Out!

We will be creating a welcome pack that will include:

* An informative booklet about why a balanced life is essential.

* Promotional things such as a screen printed t-shirt with our slogan on, notepad and posters.

* Details of how to sign up to reminder emails we have created.

* Details of how to sign up to social networking groups and websites that we have created. (facebook, blog, email)

* The packaging for the promotional pack.

* Weekly and daily blank timetables.

We have also decided to create a superhero character that will be our 'mascot' for time management and have come up with a few slogans for promotional t-shirts. One our favorites is 'get your clock out' in order to remind people to keep up with things and check the time!

Speaking from Experience Concept

This brief is pretty open and we can take it in any direction we want so i decided to focus on things i have done through the year and go back over the things i would like to do more of in terms of design. I have decided to work collaboratively with Jane and we will be creating a Welcome pack to first years that will help them manage their time as this is what we both have struggled with and would have liked help with when we stared university. Our message is that time management is essential for a balanced life and our concept is to create a promotional and awareness pack for first years as an aid for them to manage their time effectively so they keep up to date with work, have time to eat, have time to sleep, relax and have a social life.

Final product 1982

These images are what i created for my final product for the year calendar brief. I like the concept of having a 3d calendar but i think that the materials used don't show this idea to its full potential. I think they would look really good as solid wooden cubes or solid plastic cubes as that would fit more with 1982. I also think the packaging could be greatly improved which i think i might do just because its so unfinished and weak. I thought making the text into a fully justified square would also fit with the Rubik's cube theme and was created intentionally.

1982 Update

This image is of a calendar in the shape of a cube. I found it in a Japanese graphic design book that i have and i thought it was quite interesting as it looks really different to any calendar ive seen and i think it would be fun to play around with!

1982 update - YELLE "JE VEUX TE VOIR"

This video is by Yelle and it has quite an 80's feel to the style of music, clothes and the concept and set of the video. It has sections that pop up throughout the whole video where there are dancers dancing in front of a light installation which is an obvious 80's reference to a Rubik's Cube and i thought it was a good visual reference with a good song attached so i thought it was worth a mention!

1982 update - Rubik's Cube

I thought the most interesting thing from my list of 10 was the fact that the Rubik's Cube World championship was held in June 1982. I decided to use the visual language and imagery associated with the Rubik's Cube to develop this preliminary idea of a 3D calendar mocked up in paper. I created small individual templates for cubes in illustrator and then made them up to create a whole 'Rubik's Cube' I then created another cube to hold all the other cubes in. I will place layouts of months on each side of the cube and i placed the 300 word synopsis of 1982 on the inside opening of the top part of the cube. For the '1982' font i used a star wars font as that was also released in June 1982. The body copy is Helvetica and i chose this as its very legible. I might change my font choices later on.

1982

I have been given a year to research and then i will have to create a calendar based on my given year or at least a specific month from that year. I was given 1982 and have started researching it already. I came up with what i think are the top ten interesting facts of 1982:

1. The Falklands war started on 2nd of April and finished on
14th June.
2. All nine planets aligned on 10th March.
3. Star wars Empire Strikes Back the game came out.
4. Blade-runner came out on 25th June.
5. The Rubik’s Cube world championship was on 5th June and held
in Budapest.
6. Channel 4 first aired on 2nd November.
7. The Government gave the go ahead for satellite T.V.
8. The fifth doctor Who (of 1982) was Peter Davison.
9. C.D’s were first introduced in Germany on the 17th of August.
10.Michael Jackson’s number 1 Album Thriller became the best
selling album of all time!

Convincing Lie Results - Clarity Cosmetics

As part of my collaborative project with Emma and Amy we created a whole range of cosmetic product labels, a logo, decided on colours and context into which we put our design. We decided a womens magazine context would be appropriate for our target audience and this would be the best place for them to see our advert and react to it.

Below are the images of the products and the gift packaging. (Amy made the gift packaging box herself!)

Below is the final magazine advert.

Communication is a virus - A Convincing Lie

We chose collaborative groups to work with today and then had to chose from a list of starting points. We chose "tell a convincing lie" Our concept is to package a cosmetic product and to promote a lie that goes with it. We will be using science to confuse people into believing our lie, which is taking a fact and exaggerating it enough to be believable but simple enough to be effective. Our target audience is women aged between 20 and 40 as this is the main market for cosmetic products and we will be using the fact that most women who buy these cosmetics don't really understand the science behind them but still trust that they work.

Adverts - ME+YOU

I had to create these in half an hour and i thought they were ok but could do with some improvement and my name or contact details on them otherwise i think they are pretty straight forward and to the point. I like the CMYK aspect but once printed the yellow doesnt really show up. Ill post them for now but then i will have to develop them and repost later:

Locksmith Results

Below are my final designs from the mailshot project. I created a business card, an envelope and a keyring sized/shaped leaflet that i attached an old key to, so people could bring the key back and get a free key cut when they came in store. I created key imagery to go with this theme and i experimented with ideas and imagery by sketching ideas out, photographing keys and experimenting with formats, sizes, scales, colour fonts and layouts. Here are the final designs:
First two images - both sides of business card
Second two images - both sides of promo key ring
Third image - envelope design.

Buzz it

This is my first post using BUZZ IT and i dont really like using it, it seems fiddly and takes longer than blogger to edit and sort. Anyway i decided to look at a good old favourite website of mine : Pingmag. This post is about Graphic design in China. I really like the graphic quality of this image. I think the use of black and white creates a really strong image and the subtle yellow draws your attention to it.

I really like the composition, the colour and the layering in the following image. I think Oriental text and fonts are really graphical themselves and as they are already more image than text to an outsider.
I think the simplicity of this sculpture is really interesting and i have a similar model that you could have painted yourself.

The model i have is called a Qee and it looks pretty similar to these models:

I really like this image also as i think it is a really strong powerful image due to the limited colour palette and the composition and lighting of the photo.
I think the following image is very graphical due to the layers and the way the text has been arranged. Also the colours used are very oriental.

The love following image due to the simplicity and detail.

Locksmith - Mailshot

I have been given the profession of 'locksmith' and i am quite excited about it as i can immediately think of lots of imagery. I have to design and produce a business card, envelope and at least one other graphic device (such as a poster/postcard or promo leaflet etc) I want to create something simple and striking that has appropriate imagery and as another graphic device i want to use a promotional item that has a 'call to action' element in it that will make my mailshot an effective device.

Book Promotional Poster Results

Here are details from my finished poster designs.

7 April 2008

Book Promotional Poster Design.

For my promotional poster design for my book i thought i would try and keep it focused on simplicity and delicateness, as this was also the focus of my book. I want a feeling of lightness and i will be using a limited colour palette of black, white and stock to portray this. I want my posters to look detailed but simple and inform people of what my book is about while showing enough of my content to intrigue and excite. I will have to decide if i want image or text to plain a main role or have a balance of both. It has to be A3 scale not format and include the date of release and the title of my book. I would also like to include negative space/cutting work in my design.
